UNBOXING: Owlcrate Limited Edition Vicious & Vengeful Box

Heeeyyy, readers! I’m back this Sunday with a fun unboxing for you all: Owlcrate‘s first Limited Edition box in collaboration with a beloved author, V.E. Schwab, featuring her newest book VENGEFUL – the highly anticipated, 5-years-in-the-making sequel to VICIOUS.

Now… let the unboxing begin!

P.S. Don’t let your jealousy RUIN YOU 😉

DSCN2344

Looks-wise, I love the design for the ELI candle… scent and character-wise, I’m very partial to the VICTOR candle. There’s no official description of the scents though…all I know is I don’t like the scent of the ELI candle at all – reminds me of the suffocating scent that hits me whenever I enter a Kirkland store or some arts & crafts store. On the other hand, the VICTOR candle is a very clean and shall I say manly just-got-out-of-the-shower smell? Anyway, I likeeeyyy.

DSCN2348

I remember Mitch and he was one of my favorite characters in Vicious, because he was just so unexpectedly nice… and smart. I don’t remember him loving chocolate milk though, but that sounds like him, alright!

This lip balm smells and tastes sooooo yummmy (yep, once again, I kind of ate it…)

DSCN2349

Wouldn’t say I was thrilled about the socks exactly, but it’s kind of cool. Hopefully my mom would like it… haha! I don’t wear socks, it’s too hot for me (even during the winter)… my feet feels suffocated lol.

The design was apparently inspired by the new Vicious cover (redesigned by Wil Staehle, artist of the ADSOM trilogy covers):

DSCN2351

I would say this box is just perfect for the Halloween season – I’m not very fond of it, but at least it features probably one of the most-well known quotes from VICIOUS.

DSCN2353

And now we come to my favorite item from the box! I love stationery items! And I think black-out poetry’s pretty cool… if I’m not mistaken, the UK covers look like this. Can’t wait for my Illumicrate box that should include an exclusive UK cover for VENGEFUL. But, wait.. I’m getting ahead of myself.. let’s finish this unboxing first.

DSCN2355

Aren’t Melie’s illustrations so on-point?? Victor looks so badass, Eli looks despicable (because he is), and Sydney and Dol looks so innocent.

And this Marcella is certainly intriguing – she kind of reminds me of Lila Bard from the ADSOM trilogy.

DSCN2357

  • Signed first edition of VENGEFUL + sticker + mini EO enamel pin

The cover looks sleek (wooohoo, I finally have a signed V.E. Schwab book!) and honestly, it took me a few seconds to figure out what the little person was about lol.

DSCN2358

And last but not least…

  • VICIOUS + VENGEFUL spoiler card + newsletter + Owlcrate button

DSCN2335

Let’s all just take a step back and appreciate the all-black Owlcrate Limited Edition box… I don’t have a pic for you guys, but the interior is red so it matches the black and red theme of VENGEFUL’s cover.

And that concludes today’s unboxing! Thanks for reading!

Have fun, and stay peachy 😉

ARC REVIEW: The Opposite of Innocent by Sonya Sones (Sep 2018)

Sometimes I feel like a book. Like a book that’s never been opened – hidden away in a long-forgotten library, waiting for someone to find me, ease me off my shelf, and read me.

Synopsis: Poignant and chilling by turns, The Opposite of Innocent is award-winning author Sonya Sones’s most gripping novel in verse yet. It’s the story of a girl named Lily, who’s been crushing on a man named Luke, a friend of her parents, ever since she can remember. In this powerful tale of a terrifying leap into young adulthood, readers will accompany Lily on her harrowing journey from hopelessness to hope.

To be published September 4, 2018 by HarperTeen

Genre: YA Contemporary, YA Novels in Verse, YA Coming-of-Age, YA Poetry

Themes: sexual abuse, innocence, sex with a minor, rape, poetry, photography, self-portrait, secrets, asking for help, little sister

Amazon* / Barnes & Noble / Book Depository

Goodreads

Lily’s story is both haunting and chilling – and with such a delicate subject. It was a very quick read but is also very heavy, emotionally. We have a character here who started out being so young – in age, heart, mind, and soul. She goes through this rapid progression of maturity, completely paralleled by the rapid narrative through verses. The unraveling of Lily’s story is both beautiful and ugly, full of hope but also full of pain.

This is the first novel in verse that I’ve read. If you haven’t read a novel in verse yet, I highly recommend you do so, and maybe you could start with this one, too!

Thank you HarperTeen for my review copy!

Love & Luck

Love & Luck was an absolutely wonderful read, mixing fresh and classic themes that all meld into a perfect contemporary piece! It’s a story about self-discovery, being brave, and worthy friendships.

I especially enjoyed that it’s not your usual YA contemporary romance read that is centered around the boy-girl romantic relationship – this one’s mostly about Addie’s relationship with her brother, Ian.

Addie’s journey to self-discovery is so great to read, and I just love how her friendships/relationships/interactions with people are portrayed. Even the “villain” in the story is somewhat lovable.

…age has nothing to with what you can accomplish – if you’ve got it, you’ve got it. Why wait until you grow up? And then once you’re all grown-up, why stop?

Besides the fun plot and characters, I love the wit and wisdom packed into this! I especially loved the entries from the Ireland for the Heartbroken guidebook – oh, how I wish it’s a real thing, I would sooo buy it. Not that I’m wishing for a broken heart. I just saw that the B&N exclusive edition has additional entries, so I might just grab myself a copy so I can own this beautiful book + read those fun entries!

You don’t need anyone, unless you want them. You’re enough all on your own. You’re more than enough. You’re Maeve.

I wanted to get this review out before the summer ends because it definitely is a PERFECT summer read! If you’re looking to get out of a reading slump, this one’s also for you, since it’s short and sweet and quite uplifting!

P.S. London is my top dream destination! Why? Two words: Jane Austen. Although I’ve read a lot of books set in Ireland and Scotland, I want to visit those too!!!

COVER REVEAL: 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne (Author of The Hating Game)

Crush: a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach…

I knowww, I knooooww. You probably have all heard of The Hating Game by now. It certainly made the rounds.

Love it or hate it, you can move on to Sally’s new upcoming novel, 99 Percent Mine. As for me, I am 100% ANTICIPATING this.

GAHHH. I will need to buy a copy of The Hating Game, because their covers match!!!

Here’s the synopsis for you…

Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty—ever since, she’s had to learn to settle for good enough.

When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade.

Suddenly Darcy’s considering sticking around to make sure her twin doesn’t ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his penchant for grey and chrome. She’s definitely not staying because of her new business partner’s tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that’s inspiring her to pick up her camera again. Soon sparks are flying—and it’s not the faulty wiring. It turns out one percent of Tom’s heart might not be enough for Darcy anymore. This time around, she’s switching things up. She’s going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers.

And here you go!

#LifeUpdateFriday

So I’m doing life updates now? As of this moment, I apparently am.

You might or might not have noticed that I haven’t been posting too much lately besides for a few blog tours and/or mini updates.

Well, that’s because my life got a little busier. I’m not exactly scrambling or anything, but I guess that’s why I’m not blogging as often because I don’t want to be scrambling or putting out non-quality posts. I really do not like the idea of reviewing books by batches, so right now, there are a bunch of books that I need to review. I think I’m nearing 20 books “pending review” – NOT good because the end of the year is FAST approaching, can you believe it?!

train GIF

What have I been up to?

  • Started my new job! Well, it’s nearing two months now, actually. But I still love it! Timing-wise, it’s much more flexible, and I think it really is a breath of fresh air to feel like you “own” your time even though that’s exactly what they pay you for? Do you know what I mean? I’m so happy because I’m finally in the field that I want to work in – TAX! It’s so exciting. There’s no two days that are alike, and I never know what to expect. It’s been fun, and I hope it continues being that way.
  • Been listening to a lot of audio. Instead of hating or just tolerating my around 2-hr per day commute time, I’m loving it! I actually look forward to when I can get back to my car and drive and just listen to powerful motivational speakers like Jim Rohn (MY FAVORITE!!!), Les Brown, and Darren Hardy – I hope to review and share some of the stuff I learned with you guys, when time allows.
  • Not reading a lot…. 😦 Sorry to disappoint you, but nope, I haven’t been reading so much lately (except for the audiobooks I mentioned). When I get home, my eyes and brain are usually so tired I just want to either sleep or watch a movie or an episode of a favorite show.

sad face GIF

Speaking of a favorite show…

  • DYLAN WANG is my new OBSESSION. Really, I’m obsessed with the entire cast of the 2018 version of the classic Taiwanese drama, Meteor Garden. It’s on Netflix, y’all, and I highly highly highly recommend it! It has the best parts of YA contemporary romance fiction, except with visuals (GREAT visuals). AMAZING VISUALS. Like I’m shipping #DyShen so hard, it’s not even funny – like, I am convinced that if they end up together in real life, my life is DIRECTLY going to be positively affected. I have no idea where I get this idea from.

Here’s my Didi:

And here’s my #DyShen being so cute together:

Thank you for being kind enough to read all that! I hope you at least enjoyed it a LITTLE bit!

P.S. How have you all been doing?? I REALLY really miss being around here and interacting with you guys.

Did you like my first life update? Or do you prefer this to be my first and last one? (it’s okay, you can tell me 😉 )

Kiss the boys and make them cry…

Synopsis:

The gods are gone. The people have forgotten them. But sixteen-year-old Rachel Patel can’t forget – the gods control her life, or more specifically, her love life. Being a Hedoness, one of a strong group of women descended from Greek God Eros, makes true love impossible for Rachel. She wields the power of that magical golden arrow, and with it, the promise to take the will of any boy she kisses. But the last thing Rachel wants is to force someone to love her… When seventeen-year-old Benjamin Blake’s disappearance links back to the Hedonesses, Rachel’s world collides with his, and her biggest fear becomes a terrifying reality. She’s falling for him – a messy, magnetic, arrow-over-feet type of fall. Rachel distances herself, struggling to resist the growing attraction, but when he gives up his dream to help her evade arrest, distance becomes an insurmountable task. With the police hot on their trail, Rachel soon realizes there are darker forces hunting them – a group of mortals recruited by the gods who will stop at nothing to preserve the power of the Hedonesses – not to mention Eros himself, who is desperate to reverse the curse… Rachel must learn to do what no Hedoness has done before – to resist her gift – or she’ll turn the person she’s grown to love into a shadow of himself… for ever.

BLOG TOUR (+mini review): Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart

GRACE AND FURY

Well, well, well. Guess what I’m here for again today? Another blog tour! Seems that’s all I have to write lately 😦 But anyway, they’re pretty fun. This week, I’m honored to be part of the first leg of Grace and Fury‘s tour (also, check out the great review from Confessions of a YA Reader) – if you want to see the full tour schedule, please click the banner above!

Synopsis: In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi Tessaro face two very different fates: one in the palace, the other in prison. Serina has been groomed her whole life to become a Grace–someone to stand by the heir to the throne as a shining, subjugated example of the perfect woman. But when her headstrong and rebellious younger sister, Nomi, catches the heir’s eye, it’s Serina who takes the fall for the dangerous secret that Nomi has been hiding. Now trapped in a life she never wanted, Nomi has only one way to save Serina: surrender to her role as a Grace until she can use her position to release her sister. This is easier said than done. A traitor walks the halls of the palace, and deception lurks in every corner. But Serina is running out of time, imprisoned on an island where she must fight to the death to survive and one wrong move could cost her everything.

Goodreads

A yes doesn’t mean the same thing when it’s the only answer you’re allowed!

Grace and Fury – it’s The Selection meets Traitor Prince meets The Handmaid’s Tale. What makes it even more interesting is the dynamic of the differing perspectives of the Tessaro sisters – Serina and Nomi. While Serina is raised to be soft and beautiful, Nomi grew up to be headstrong and rebellious, but then unexpected circumstances leads them to somehow thrive by wielding what they each thought were the other’s strengths. I loved how I could easily identify which perspective I was reading in because of their different motivations. The plot picks up right from page one, and there’s so much intrigue woven in between.

Also…. can you imagine a world where it’s forbidden for women to read???! I’d totally be a NOMI.

Even with all the royalty-themed YA fantasy books out there, I think this one’s still worth giving a try!

Thank you to Hachette Book Group for my review copy! Special thanks to Katharine McAnarney, senior publicist at Little Brown Books for Young Readers.
