What was your inspiration for writing Heart of Iron? When did the idea first come to you?
I remember scrolling through Tumblr and this scene just hit me – of a girl and a robot diving through space, from one ship to another. What was her story? Who was the robot? A thousand questions – and I wanted to find the answers.
What is your writing process like?
I fix myself a cup of coffee, sit down at my desk, and bang my head against the keyboard for a while until genius strikes.
Heart of Iron features a very diverse cast of characters that we absolutely fell in love with. Was it challenging juggling all of their different story lines?
It was kind of like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. It took a while to understand all of their voices, and to keep track of their motivations and who knows what and when, but I’m glad I took the time and was patient!
Have you always been interested in science fiction? If so, what is your favorite thing about the genre?
I’ve always loved sci-fi. I think what I love the most is how sci-fi (within certain rules) can be whatever you want it to be. From opera like Jupiter Ascending to westerns like Firefly to adventures like Star Trek. It’s versatile and, at least for me, it was the first genre that told stories where women could be captains.
Can you share any secret tidbits about the next book in the series?
Maaaaaaybe a little? The sequel to Heart of Iron is called Soul of Stars, and all of your favorite characters will be returning – but they might not all be on the same side anymore. 😡
